About CPRIT

On November 6, 2007, Texas voters approved Proposition 15 - HJR 90, the constitutional amendment which allows the State of Texas to establish the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (the Institute) and allows the Institute to issue $3 billion in general obligation bonds over ten years to fund grants for cancer research and prevention. The Institute may invest the grants strategically in cancer research, clinical trials, and laboratory facility construction in Texas. The Institute will continue to implement the Texas Cancer Plan.


Mission

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is the state agency established to

  • create and expedite innovation in the area of cancer research and to enhance the potential for a medical or scientific breakthrough in the prevention of cancer and cures for cancer;

  • attract, create, or expand research capabilities of public or private institutions of higher education and other public or private entities that will promote a substantial increase in cancer research and in the creation of high-quality new jobs in this state;

  • and develop and implement the Texas Cancer Plan.


Philosophy

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas will maintain the highest integrity and dedication to the mission of finding a cure for cancer. The Institute will become a world-class leader in research and prevention by

  • collaboration with a variety of entities, community leaders, and other organizations involved in the fight against cancer;

  • innovation in the selection of research projects emphasizing immediate or long term medical breakthroughs;

  • commercialization of completed research; and

  • education for citizens with culturally appropriate information about ways in which their risks of developing and dying from cancer can be reduced.
